About the Canaan Nano 3S

The Canaan Avalon Nano 3S is a compact, plug-and-play Bitcoin home miner from one of the oldest continuing ASIC manufacturers. It's pitched at the home user who wants a finished consumer appliance rather than a DIY open-source board — a device you take out of the box, plug in, point at a pool, and forget about. Compared with a Bitaxe Gamma or a NerdQaxe++, the Nano 3S trades open firmware and hackability for a supported product experience and meaningfully more hashrate per unit.

At around 6.0 TH/s and 140 watts, the Nano 3S lands near 23 J/TH — less efficient than the single-chip Bitaxe Gamma at about 12.5 J/TH or a NerdQaxe++ at about 15.6 J/TH, but it delivers noticeably more hashrate per unit of space. On a typical home electricity rate of $0.12/kWh, running the Nano 3S 24/7 costs roughly $12 per month. That puts it in a different bracket than the truly cheap-to-run single-chip hobby devices, and it's worth sanity-checking against your local electricity rate before committing to continuous operation — it's still well under the power cost of a full Antminer, but it isn't free.

The Nano 3S mines SHA-256, so the candidate list is Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, BSV, eCash, and smaller SHA-256 chains. The live cross-coin ranking on the calculator sorts those by expected value given 6.0 TH/s of hashrate — the number to pay attention to, especially as difficulty and prices move week to week. At this hashrate tier, solo BTC is still a long-odds proposition, but the gap between the top-ranked and bottom-ranked SHA-256 chains can be large, and the Nano 3S has enough throughput that chasing those gaps is a real strategy rather than a rounding error.

Setup uses Canaan's stock firmware and web UI — no flashing required. Point it at a solo pool that accepts external miners, supply a payout address, and you're running. The Nano 3S is audibly louder than a Bitaxe-class device, so plan for a utility room, closet, or garage if noise matters. Within Canaan's lineup, the Avalon Mini 3 and Avalon Q scale up substantially but also move into industrial-class power draw. If you'd rather track coin EV automatically than watch the calculator by hand, SoloOdds Pro sends alerts when the best-EV SHA-256 chain changes.
